Theme statement: You control what happens in your life and the excuses you make
Literary Device: personification
P.54 " Justin had it worse than I did but was still one of the best performing kids in the class. My litany of excuses trailed off.
Analysis:
This quote uses personification because Wes refers to the excuses he makes as trailing off when he talks to his friend Justin who is doing better in school than he is. Wes lives in a similar neighborhood as justin and with his 2 sisters and his mom who works hard to give him a good life and education. Wes goes to a good school in a nice neighborhood but chooses not to go to school and not do his work. he makes excuses for not doing what hes supposed to do and thats why he failed the 6th grade. His friend justin is living in the same circumstances that Wes is living in and still does a good job in school. this shows that you can make a better life for yourself if you dont make excuses.
