The other wes moore theme analysis

Blog #1

Theme statement: education determines the kind of life a family will have.

Literary device: metaphor

P.17 "Her heart jumped when she received her acceptance letter. It was a golden ticket to another world but also to the dizzying idea that the life she wanted, that she dreamed about, might actually happen for her"

Analysis:
In the other Wes Moore's family, education wasn't something they had much of. The other Wes Moore's mom, Mary Moore, was the only one to even begin college and had grown up in a dangerous neighborhood in Baltimore. Neither one of Mary Moore's parents had gone to college and they had to buy small cheap houses in dangerous neighborhoods. The other Wes's mom became pregnant with a man named Bernard who had also dropped out of high school years before and hadn't been able to find a stable job to support the family because of that. The acceptance letter was a golden ticket to her because it shows that education was a way to be successful and provide for the family. Her past also shows how education is an important part of a good life.
