Theme Statement: Many kids that grow up in dangerous neighborhoods are forced to become responsible at a young age.

Literary Device: Metaphor

p. 140 " Where was God when kids were selling rocks at twelve years old. and their parents encouraged it because the kids were the main breadwinners in the home?

Analysis:
In the quote it talks about how kids are the "breadwinners" of the house. this is a metaphor because its comparing earning money to winning bread. Kids that grow up in neighborhoods like Wes did are forced to become responsible at a young age because their families are short on money or food and they are taught or forced to help out in any way they can even if it is dangerous. Most times kids lose their innocence early and end up in ad situations because of how they had to grow up. In the end of the chapter even though Wes tried to find jobs he could never really find a permanent good paying job because he never wen to school. The reason Wes dropped out of school was to make money for himself that his family couldn't provide by selling drugs. When Wes couldn't find a good job he went back to selling drugs. Him selling drugs to support his family didn't lead him to the best future and that happens to many other kids.

Theme Statement: Many people are involved in gangs because they feel a sense of belonging and family.

Literary DEvice: metaphor

P.111 "An unbreakable bond united the crew- for many members it was the only support system they had. It was family"

Analysis"
A metaphor is used in this quote by saying a gang is like a family and comparing the two. For the other Wes he felt like he belonged in the crew and i think many other gang members fel accepted in ganga which is why so many people are in them because they feel like its the only option and feel like its the closest thing to family. Wes also controlled and was responsible for his "team" and it might have made him feel like they were brothers or family that he had to take care of.

Theme Statement: A fathers role can affect a child's life

Literary Device: personification

P.101 "Wes's nonexistent relationship with his father probably contributed to his seeming indifference about becoming a father himself"

Analysis:
In the quote it says the nonexistent relationship Wes and his dad had probably contributed to Wes's idea of being a father. The quote seems like personification because the father-son relationship is being used as a contributor to something else. When the other Wes finds out hes going to be a father he doesn't know how to react and doesn't really care or understand the responsibilities that come out of being a parent and it might be due to the fact that his dad was never around to talk to him about things like that and Wes didn't have him as an example to follow or role model. Also for Wes the narrator not having a dad might have had something to do with why his behavior is out of control because his father isn't there to help him with the transition from being a child to a Young adult and with teaching him how to mature and that's probably why he gets sent to military school to have a manly figure there that will replace his fathers absence. Not having a dad may affect a lot of children because they don't have an example to follow or advice a mother cant give.

Theme Statement:  If you want someone to hear your advice you must set a good example.

Literary Device: Metaphor

p.72 "If you wont listen, thats on you. you have potential to do so much more, go so much further. you can lead a horse to water but you cant make him drink it right?"

Analysis:
In this quote tony tries to talk to Wes about his drug dealing problems even though tony grew up being a drug dealer himself. Tony wants Wes to grow up and be a good person because he knows Wes has potential. Even though Tony tries to talk to him Wes still wants to be like him and follows in his footsteps. Wes cant change because he has grown up influenced by his brother and what his brother does and he hasnt had a good role model to learn from. If you want someone to be a certain way you have to help them and give examples because most people especially younger siblings follow after you and learn from what you do.

Theme statement: You control what happens in your life and the excuses you make

Literary Device: personification

P.54 " Justin had it worse than I did but was still one of the best performing kids in the class. My litany of excuses trailed off.

Analysis:
This quote uses personification because Wes refers to the excuses he makes as trailing off when he talks to his friend Justin who is doing better in school than he is. Wes lives in a similar neighborhood as justin and with his 2 sisters and his mom who works hard to give him a good life and education. Wes goes to a good school in a nice neighborhood but chooses not to go to school and not do his work. he makes excuses for not doing what hes supposed to do and thats why he failed the 6th grade. His friend justin is living in the same circumstances that Wes is living in and still does a good job in school. this shows that you can make a better life for yourself if you dont make excuses.

Theme statement: Not all circumstances determine the outcome of your future

Literary device: Imagery

P.43 "The Bronx was in its postapocalyptic phase. Whole blocks were abandoned, buildings blackened and hollowed out by fires set by arsonists-many of whom were in the employ of landlords looking to cash out of the deteriorating ghetto"

Analysis:
This quote tells about Wes Moore's neighborhood. The imagery used creates a picture in the readers minds of how bad things were when they were growing up. Even though Wes Moore grew up influenced by these things but turned out to be a successful man while the other Wes Moore grew up to be bad and getting into trouble. This quote shows that not every circumstance will determine how your life will be like and you have to create your own future.

Theme statement: education determines the kind of life a family will have.

Literary device: metaphor

P.17 "Her heart jumped when she received her acceptance letter. It was a golden ticket to another world but also to the dizzying idea that the life she wanted, that she dreamed about, might actually happen for her"

Analysis:
In the other Wes Moore's family, education wasn't something they had much of. The other Wes Moore's mom, Mary Moore, was the only one to even begin college and had grown up in a dangerous neighborhood in Baltimore. Neither one of Mary Moore's parents had gone to college and they had to buy small cheap houses in dangerous neighborhoods. The other Wes's mom became pregnant with a man named Bernard who had also dropped out of high school years before and hadn't been able to find a stable job to support the family because of that. The acceptance letter was a golden ticket to her because it shows that education was a way to be successful and provide for the family. Her past also shows how education is an important part of a good life.
